Creative English is a series of English Language tests designed for Caribbean Primary Schools
The main objectives are:
-
To develop skills in the use of language, both oral and written.
-
To develop students’ powers of imagination, judgement and insight.
-
To stimulate and encourage reading for pleasure and understanding.
Each book consists of 22 Units featuring reading of prose and verse for understanding and appreciation, vocabulary usage, spelling activities, grammatical structures and creative writing. The course offers a variety of learning experiences – reading for understanding, group and individual work, speaking and listening activities, dramatization, research and creative writing. Its wise use will depend on teachers’ willingness to adapt and modify, using initiative and insight.
The extracts selected both prose and verse, are appropriate to children’s interests, experiences and the challenges they offer to their intelligence and insights. A wealth of oral activities focusing on picture illustrations and comprehension pieces precede a range of written practice. Free oral activities lend to greater proficiency in the writing tasks which follow. While free expression is always suggested, at times in the course, limits are suggested to guide students.
The activities are designed to extend the experiences of children and these take the form of follow-up activities based on the experiences presented, suggestions for dramatic activities, vocabulary extension and functional grammatical structures and mechanics.
Core grammatical items with clear and concise explanations of rules are integral to the language learning process. Recent decline in formal correctness has motivated a greater emphasis on the teaching of grammar. The text adheres to the notion of grammar as functional and essential in laying a strong foundation for proficient language expression.
The work here offers a variety of learning experiences with the hope of creating positive responses. While it is felt that no text is adequate, its positive impact will be determined by teachers’ readiness to adapt and supplement and modify as the learning situation demands.
